Description

Kit Carson Electric Cooperative (KCEC) is a member-owned electric distribution cooperative founded in 1944, proudly serving the communities of Taos, Colfax, and Rio Arriba Counties in New Mexico. With a strong commitment to community service, KCEC has grown to serve over 29,000 members and employs approximately 125 families through its operations. The cooperative has played a pivotal role in local economic development, adapting to industry changes and expanding its service offerings.

In response to the electrical deregulation movement during the 1990s, KCEC diversified its services beyond electricity, venturing into propane and internet through Kit Carson Internet, which has significantly enhanced connectivity in the region. KCEC has invested heavily in infrastructure, establishing over 2,900 miles of fiber optic lines to provide high-speed internet and phone services.

A leader in renewable energy, KCEC has focused on solar energy production since 2002, taking strides to become known as "The Solar Capital of the World". The cooperative aims to achieve 100% daytime solar energy by 2022, a goal supported by strategic partnerships with independent energy providers. These initiatives solidify KCEC's reputation as a front-runner in adopting innovative utility business models focusing on sustainable energy solutions.

KCEC is distinguished as the second-largest cooperative in New Mexico and operates with a mission to provide reliable and renewable energy while fostering economic resilience and environmental stewardship within its communities. The cooperative's vision and projects not only benefit its members but also contribute to the broader goals of energy cost stabilization and job creation in north central New Mexico.
