Kleis Construction Inc. is a well-established excavation company based in Greenwood, Indiana, with a proud history dating back to 1972. Founded by Charles McClure and Bob Kleis, the company has grown significantly from its early beginnings when it operated with just two pieces of equipment. Kleis, a Purdue University graduate, served as the estimator and worked alongside McClure, a union operator. Together, they embarked on a journey that would see their firm take on numerous school, hospital, and commercial projects throughout the Indianapolis area.
Initially known as McClure and Kleis Construction, the company made its name by successfully completing various projects, starting with Forest Manor Middle School. Over the years, it evolved into a robust business with an impressive fleet of 16 units, typically employing 15 to 25 skilled workers during the construction season. As a union shop, the company collaborated with prominent general and mechanical contractors in the region, solidifying its reputation for quality and reliable work.
In 1977, Bob Kleis became the sole owner after purchasing McClure's stake, and in 1982, he relocated the business to its current site in Greenwood. The next generation continued the family legacy, with Craig Kleis joining the company as a laborer in 1985 before eventually rising through the ranks to take over leadership in 2006.
Today, Kleis Construction is recognized as a medium-sized excavating company serving all of central Indiana. They specialize in a range of excavation services, including site utilities, sewers, and water lines, along with small site excavations. Their equipment capabilities range from excavators weighing 3 to 20 metric tons. The company prides itself on maintaining high standards of safety and quality, being an active member of the Metro Indianapolis Coalition of Construction Safety (MICCS). With decades of experience and a commitment to excellence, Kleis Construction continues to be a trusted partner in the region's construction industry.
