Owen Electric Cooperative, Inc., established in 1937, is dedicated to providing reliable electric service to the rural residents of Owen County and its surrounding areas in Kentucky. Originally known as Owen County Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation (RECC), it began its journey with a small group of members who sought electricity to improve their lives. Over the years, Owen Electric expanded its service area, empowering local communities by extending its reach to neighboring counties.
As a not-for-profit cooperative, Owen Electric is owned and operated by its members, who participate in electing the Board of Directors responsible for guiding the cooperative's initiatives. The cooperative prides itself on its unique governance structure, ensuring that member-owners are engaged in the decision-making process.
In addition to providing electric services, Owen Electric is at the forefront of sustainability efforts. It launched its green energy program, Envirowatts, in 2001, which utilizes renewable sources such as biomass, hydro, solar, and wind.
