Power CDC, established in 1994, is a community development corporation located in Wichita, Kansas. As a nonprofit organization, it was founded by local residents dedicated to revitalizing their neighborhoods and taking on various challenges—from providing social services to developing low-income housing and stimulating commercial activities in underserved areas. The organization’s mission is to foster economic revitalization specifically in the Central-Northeast neighborhoods of Wichita.
Key focus areas of Power CDC include Small Business Development, where the organization aims to create a neighborhood retail center to attract new businesses, assist residents in developing entrepreneurial skills, and expand opportunities for ownership and management of businesses by local residents. Community organization is another vital aspect of their operations, working to build awareness and concern for community issues, changing perceptions, and uplifting local pride.
Over the past decade, Power CDC has made significant strides in affordable housing, facilitating the construction of nearly 100 new homes that replaced blighted structures with modern, livable environments. They’ve also successfully established a full-service grocery store, providing residents with access to quality food and employment opportunities, which stimulates economic growth in the area. In addition to these initiatives, Power CDC is committed to the educational development of local youth through the establishment of a college scholarship named after its founding executive director, aimed at supporting underprivileged students in their pursuit of higher education.
Furthermore, the organization has actively worked on redevelopment projects, such as the Historic Dunbar Community Center, which preserves the cultural heritage of Wichita’s African-American community and serves as a hub for community events. Power CDC’s Board comprises individuals with diverse expertise, ranging from law to anthropology, showcasing the organization’s dedication to accountability and impactful governance. Together, they strive to effect positive change and enhance the quality of life for all residents in the Central-Northeast neighborhoods of Wichita.
